  • Brian Russell With a Happy Fisherman! Brian Russell With a Happy Fisherman! One aspect of Kokanee Power of Oregon is to promote Kokanee fishing in general and to promote it as a family activity. Generally this is done via our derbies or with friends and family. Friday August 26th I had a unique opportunity to get a group of people, both adults and kids, excited about Kokanee fishing. About a month ago I got a phone call from Gary Lewis, Bend area outdoor writer, asking me if I wanted to help take a group of people out that had minimal fishing exposure and no Kokanee fishing experience. I agreed.
  • Life is Good! Life is Good! We first met at Odell Lake Lodge at 6 am. There were three boats and each was filled with eager fishermen. I had four adults and a young man whose 18th birthday was that day. As we motored out into the lake it was decided that the "birthday boy" would get the first fish. It did not take long to get our fist fish. Thankfully the fish were cooperative and we were able to get each person into several fish. Not having any prior experience with downriggers provided everyone the opportunity to get the chance to learn how to use them. We met back at the dock at 9, loaded the boats up and headed over to Crescent Lake to ply the waters there for more fish. My crew this time was 4 young boys and two adults. One of the adults had never caught a fish before. As luck would have it the fish were cooperative as well. Actually, there were cooperative only with one pink hoochie. My crew got to see firsthand how finicky Kokanee can be. The adults were good sports and let the kids catch all the fish, but only after getting the adult into his first fish ever. It was great fun watching how excited the kids were with each and every fish. They would all crowd the back of the boat to watch each fish being netted.
  • The Catch after a Great Day on The Water! The Catch after a Great Day on The Water! Before too long it was time to call it a day and enjoy a meal at the Crescent Lake Lodge. Following the lunch I cleaned or filleted the fish for those that wanted me to. I knew they were in for a treat eating Kokanee for the first time. I have received feedback from one person letting me know how good the fish was. It truly was a pleasure and joy to provide an avenue to this group to experience Kokanee fishing. I look forward to the next opportunity to promote Kokanee fishing. ~Brian Russell~
